Reading Order

Welcome to Margaret Amatt's Scottish Romance World

If you're wondering where to start with Margaret Amatt's Scottish romance books, you're in the right place.

There are currently three connected romance worlds to explore: Scottish Island Escapes, The Glenbriar Series, and The Glenbriar Castle Series.

The easiest way to experience the wider world in order is to begin with Scottish Island Escapes, continue into The Glenbriar Series, and then move straight on to The Glenbriar Castle Series.

But don't worry if you've already discovered Glenbriar first! All the stories can be read as standalone romances, and you don't have to read Scottish Island Escapes beforehand.

However, reading the earlier series first means you'll spot familiar characters, connections and little Easter eggs as you explore Glenbriar.

1. Scottish Island Escapes

The journey begins on the beautiful Isle of Mull, where ten standalone romances follow different couples, communities and fresh starts against the backdrop of one of Scotland's most beautiful islands.

The books are best read in publication order:

1. A Winter Haven
2. A Spring Retreat
3. A Summer Sanctuary
4. An Autumn Hideaway
5. A Christmas Bluff
6. A Flight of Fancy
7. A Hidden Gem
8. A Striking Result
9. A Perfect Discovery
10. A Festive Surprise

Why start here?

Scottish Island Escapes came before Glenbriar, and some characters eventually cross between the two series. There are also little references and Easter eggs for readers who know the earlier stories.

You don't need to know these books to enjoy Glenbriar, but if you love discovering connections between characters and communities, reading them first makes the wider Scottish romance world even more rewarding.

2. The Glenbriar Series

Next, head to the fictional Highland town of Glenbriar, a cosy community inspired by the landscapes, villages and atmosphere of Highland Perthshire.

Each novel follows a different couple, while familiar characters and locations return throughout the series. Every story has its own happily-ever-after, so you can enjoy the books individually — but reading them in order allows you to watch Glenbriar grow and discover all the connections along the way.

Once you've finished your journey through Glenbriar, there's another part of the community waiting to be explored.

Welcome to Dairvin Castle, home of the Bruce family and the Glenbriar Castle Series

.

These romances expand the Glenbriar world beyond the village itself, bringing new characters, new love stories and a rather grander setting — although the community spirit, familiar connections and Scottish charm remain firmly at its heart.

Continue the series in this order:

1. Rivals at the Castle

2. Meet Me at the Castle

Do I Have to Read the Series in Order?

No!

Every Margaret Amatt romance is designed to work as a standalone love story, so you can pick up whichever book catches your eye.

However, if you enjoy interconnected romance series, recurring characters and discovering little details that connect one story to another, the reading order above will give you the fullest experience.

The recommended journey is:

Scottish Island Escapes

The Glenbriar Series

The Glenbriar Castle Series

You can also start with Glenbriar without reading Scottish Island Escapes first. You'll simply miss some of the earlier character connections and Easter eggs — nothing that will prevent you from following the story.

Love on the Edge – Barra

Love on the Edge – Barra is another interconnected Scottish romance series, but it is separate from the wider Scottish Island Escapes and Glenbriar universe.

The stories are set on the beautiful Hebridean island of Barra and can be read independently of the other series.

If you're looking for atmospheric Scottish island romance, this is the place to go.
