Character Interview #5

Updated: Apr 17

The heroine in A Summer Sanctuary is Kirsten McGregor. Kirsten is the younger of the McGregor sisters. She's struggled in the past with her confidence but now she's in charge of an island tour company and she's ready to take control - what she hasn't factored in is the competition!

As part of the writing process, I like to flesh out my characters with quirky details and background to make them feel real. This sometimes includes a character interview. Here’s the fourth interview in the series.

These are the answers I imagined Kirsten giving at the start of the novel. Rest assured there are no spoilers!

Kirsten was a fun character to write and I loved the way she grew in strength as the story progressed and by the end she was ready to take on the world!

An interview with Kirsten McGregor from A Summer Sanctuary by Margaret Amatt

Where and when were you born?

On the Isle of Mull

Who are your parents?

My mum is Gillian who runs the holiday cottages on our farm. My dad died seven years ago.

Do you have any siblings?

My older sister, Beth, runs our farm.

Where do you live now, and with whom?

I live on my own in a little bothy at the bottom of our farm track

What is your occupation?

I run the tour company Hidden Mull – I just inherited it from the previous owners who retired earlier in the year.

What kind of distinguishing facial features do you have?

Lots of freckles!

How would you describe your childhood?

I was quite shy at school and not confident around boys.

Who are your friends, and what are they like?

My three best friends from school are Anne-Marie, Rhona and Cha – we call ourselves The Four Mullsketeers. They’ve all left the island now. These days my closest friends are my sister and Georgia Rose.

What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you so far?

When I let myself go completely with this hotshot RAF guy on one of my tours! Then he upped and left and I never heard from him again. UGH!

Do you believe in the existence of soul mates and true love?

Well, I used to. Now, who knows.

What do you look for in a potential lover?

Someone I can talk to and relate to, who accepts me for who I am and doesn’t want to change me.

What are your favourite hobbies and pastimes?

I like learning about island history and I have a lot of books on the subject.

I hope you enjoyed that little peek into Kirsten's character. If you want to discover if she changes her mind on any of these points, be sure to check out A Summer Sanctuary.

The story is a wonderful exploration of the island of Mull, as well as their re-emerging relationship. Fraser is every woman's Scottish dream, and I was rooting for Kirsten the whole way through to give him a second chance. 'A Summer Sanctuary' is a beautifully written, sweet, evocative, heart felt and gorgeous romance novel. Once again, Margaret has knocked it out the park! (Amazon reviewer)
