Character Interview #14

Updated: Apr 17

The hero in A Hidden Gem is Blair Robertson. Blair is the most-asked-about side character in my books so far! After An Autumn Hideaway and A Christmas Bluff, I had many messages asking if he would get his own story. My Beta reader after reading my first draft of A Hidden Gem said she wished Blair was real and that I could send him to her! He's a really popular guy and it's time he got his happy ending.

Here’s the latest character interview in the series. These are the answers I imagined Blair giving at the start of the novel. Rest assured there are no spoilers!

An interview with Blair Robertson from A Hidden Gem by Margaret Amatt

What is your full name?

Blair Ewan Andrew Robertson – and yes, I know my initials spell BEAR. It might have been pointed out before.

Where were you born?

On the Isle of Mull and I’ve lived there ever since.

Who are your parents?

My mum is Lynne and my dad is Mike. They divorced when I was a teenager.

Do you have any siblings?

Ryan is my younger brother.

Where do you live now, and with whom?

In a caravan on a farm near Fionnphort at the south end of the island.

What is your occupation?

Joiner, minion and general dogsbody! I used to work in a bar in Tobermory and that was a lot more sociable!

On what occasions do you lie?

Pretending everything is cool with my finances when really I’m broke.

Do you have any annoying habits or quirks?

I like making up nonsense rhymes!

Do you have any physical traits that stand out?

I wear my hair in dreadlocks and I have a stag tattoo on my upper arm.

How would you describe your childhood?

Tough. I had to look after my aging Nan while my parents worked, plus try to help my younger brother with school work. He wasn’t really interested and had a shedload of issues.

Where did you learn most of your skills and other abilities?

Real life! I was a carer from a young age and it taught me to be practical.

How did you get along with the other members of your family?

I try to get along with everyone but my younger brother can be an arse.

Who are your friends?

Almost everyone! I get on with people in general. I’m close to Autumn, Georgia and Archie but have heaps more folk I call friends.

What is your greatest regret so far, why?

Making a mistake that cost my family a lot of money.

Are you optimistic?

I like to think so.

Have you ever been in love?

Nope. I seem to be the perpetual friend. Women I date often use me as the friend with benefits and what we have doesn’t add up to love, not the way I imagine it should feel anyway.

Who would you turn to if you were in desperate need of help?

Georgia and Archie have always been good to me and I know they’d help me out in a pinch but I hate asking for help.

Who is the person you dislike the most, why?

Probably Calum, my boss. He’s tricky to get on with.

What is your greatest strength?

Being willing to help people whenever I can.

What is your greatest weakness?

Not asking for help for myself.

Are you generally introverted or extroverted?

Name three things you consider yourself to be good at, and three things you consider yourself to be bad at.

Good: cheering people up, chatting and making people feel at ease, cooking.

Bad: Being a mug and never saying no, financial skills, biting off more than I can chew.

What three words best describe your personality?

Easy-going, cheerful, helpful

I hope you enjoyed that little peek into Blair's character. If you want to discover if he changes his mind on any of these points, be sure to check out A Hidden Gem
