Character Interview #12
Updated: Apr 17
The hero in A Flight of Fancy is Magnus Hansen. Magnus is a pilot, very sociable and outgoing who makes friends easily and doesn't shy away from chatting to strangers.
As part of the writing process, I like to flesh out my characters with quirky details and background to make them feel real. This sometimes includes a character interview. Here’s the latest interview in the series.
These are the answers I imagined Magnus giving at the start of the novel. Rest assured there are no spoilers!
Magnus was a great character to write. He has his life planned out except his heart his battling his head and sending him messages that mess with his status quo. His determination to win and be the best he can be reminded me a lot of myself. I'm very competitive too and I share some of Magnus's eagerness to get to the top of the pile, win the game or come first in the race! I fell head over heals for Magnus by the end of the book and I hope you will too.
An interview with Magnus Hansen from A Flight of Fancy by Margaret Amatt
What is your full name?
Magnus John Hansen
Do you have a nickname?
Well, I don’t really shout about it, but when I worked on a private jet for an actress, I met a movie star who called me ‘Handsome Hansen’.
Where were you born?
Who are your parents?
Per and Fenella Hansen
Do you have any siblings?
Two younger brothers, Jakob and Carl
Where do you live now?
I live in a flat in Glasgow, overlooking the Clyde.
What is your occupation?
I’m a pilot. I used to fly private jets in the US, then I piloted long-haul flights for a few years before changing to short haul – they’re a lot less draining!
What does your voice sound like?
I have a Scottish accent though I wouldn’t say it’s broad. I guess my voice is quite deep as I song baritone.
Do you have any annoying habits?
I like to win.
What is your hair colour and eye colour?
Blond hair, blue eyes
How would you describe your childhood?
Mostly fun. We grew up on a remote island which I sometimes found too insular. I’m a sociable guy and I like to spread my wings. These days, I love going home for a visit and I appreciate that I grew up in such a magical place.
How did you get along with the other members of your family?
Great. We’re a pretty close family.
What are your favourite activities?
Are you optimistic or pessimistic?
Neither really, I’d say I’m more of a realist, but I would err on the side of optimism.
What is your greatest fear?
Letting people down.
What is your greatest extravagance?
Do you believe in the existence of soul mates and or true love?
Possibly, though I’m not great at long term relationships.
In general, how do you treat others?
I’d like to think I’m respectful and polite.
Do you tend to take on leadership roles in social situations?
Definitely. I love meeting new people and I’m not afraid to initiate contact.
Do you like interacting with large groups of people?
Yes, I do. I enjoy social gatherings and I don’t mind talking to large groups either socially or for business.
Do you care what others think of you?
Not really. As long as I don’t feel like I’m letting down my loved ones.
What is your favourite food?
Chips and vinegar!
Do you smoke, drink, or use drugs?
Definitely don’t smoke or do drugs. No drinking when I’m working or close to a shift but I don’t mind a drink at other times.
What makes you laugh?
Are you spontaneous, or do you always need to have a plan?
Much more of a planner but I have a spontaneous side too – when I need to!
What is the quality you most like in a woman?
Someone smart and caring who likes trying out new things.
What is your greatest strength?
I’m calm and easy going. It takes a lot to really stress me out.
What is your greatest weakness?
I’m just a guy who can’t say no!
Are you generally introverted or extroverted?
Extroverted, no question.
Are you generally organised or messy?
I hope you enjoyed that little peek into Magnus's character. If you want to discover if he changes his mind on any of these points, be sure to check out A Flight of Fancy
‘The most beautiful, heartfelt and unputdownable book. All the characters are so richly drawn and believable, and the scenes and settings so accurate you feel everything. This story pulls you in from the start and doesn't let go long after you've read the last page. It's simply brilliant.' (Amazon reviewer)
