Character Interview #11

Updated: Apr 17

The heroine in A Flight of Fancy is Taylor Rousse. Taylor is the sister of a Hollywood movie star and spends her life being pushed out the limelight in favour of her more famous twin.

As part of the writing process, I like to flesh out my characters with quirky details and background to make them feel real. This sometimes includes a character interview. Here’s the latest interview in the series.

These are the answers I imagined Taylor giving at the start of the novel. Rest assured there are no spoilers!

Taylor was a complex character to write. On the surface, she just wants to be a normal girl getting on with her life, but she's had a troubled upbringing and things have been messy. It's tough being in the background of her more famous twin. Writing her complexities was interesting and challenging. I really felt for her and hated myself for making her life so tough at times! Even I just wanted to give her a hug midway through the book. I hope you'll love Taylor when you join her on her journey to happiness.

An interview with Taylor Rousse from A Flight of Fancy by Margaret Amatt

What is your full name?

Taylor Rousse

Do you have a nickname?

Not really but sometimes people think I’m my twin sister and they call me Skylar.

Where were you born?

Los Angeles

Who are your parents?

My dad is an actor named Sammy Rousse and my mom is also an actor. She goes by her stage name Bianca Kane.

Do you have any siblings?

One twin sister, Skylar.

Where do you live now?

I live with my family in Hollywood. I don’t really have any other options.

What is your occupation?

Good question! I used to act like my sister but there was a big issue around a role we both wanted. Now, I don’t act. I do PR for my sister but I don’t really enjoy it.

On what occasions do you lie?

I have pretended to be my sister in the past… And she’s done the same to me.

How would you describe your childhood?

Crazy! I was a child actress with acting parents. We were always doing something or going somewhere to film. I had all sorts of people looking after me: sitters, chaperones, and anyone who’d have me.

How did you get along with the other members of your family?

They try to protect me but it’s stifling at times.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

I guess I just thought I’d be an actress like everyone else in my family.

What do you consider the most important event of your life so far?

Losing a big part to my sister. It basically ended my career.

Are you optimistic or pessimistic?

Recently, I guess pessimistic. It’s hard to see a happy future when I’m stuck.

Do you believe in the existence of soul mates and or true love?

Wouldn’t that be neat. But every time I meet someone nice, my sister steals him away.

What do you measure success in?

These days, I’d just like to be happy and free.

How honest are you about your thoughts and feelings in the company of others?

I tend to keep my head down and myself to myself. My family don’t like me mixing too much so I don’t really have many true friends.

What do you look for in a potential lover?

I’d like someone I can talk to, have fun with and really be myself. Someone who won’t judge my past and who’ll help me find my way in the future.

Do you tend to argue with people, or avoid conflict?

Avoid it if I can. My sister is the one who likes to argue.

What three words best describe your personality?

Resourceful, adaptable, curious

I hope you enjoyed that little peek into Taylor's character. If you want to discover if she changes her mind on any of these points, be sure to check out A Flight of Fancy

‘The most beautiful, heartfelt and unputdownable book. All the characters are so richly drawn and believable, and the scenes and settings so accurate you feel everything. This story pulls you in from the start and doesn't let go long after you've read the last page. It's simply brilliant.' (Amazon reviewer)
